The new Security Toner product line is a specially formulated toner system patented by TROY.  The toner, which is a specially engineered MICR toner formulation, contains a unique red dye (see the image at right). When printed, the red dye in the toner is printed along with the black toner on the paper. The resulting image is a black toner character or graphic on the front of a document.

Document fraud is a common problem costing business billions of dollars each year. Organized criminals often attempt fraud on checks, and other legal documents. They try to counterfeit a check by altering original documents.  The most common method of fraud on business checks and other documents is toner removal from the face of a check, with a knife or chemicals, then the criminal reprints a new character in place of the one that is removed.  This can change a check, a contract, a bond, or any important or negotiable document.

Using this technique, the payee or owner name can be changed or altered easily. Chemically reacting papers are used to help to reveal chemical alteration; however the TROY Security Toner will leave a red stain without the special paper.

Most solvents will cause the dye to migrate into surrounding areas, creating an obvious red stain (see above). If chemical alteration is a concern to your organization, Clear Image recommends using this technology in conjunction with chemically reacting papers.
